Many of these are not really health insurance plans, they are medical discount plans. Often they are not sold by licensed insurance agents and the companies are not registered with the Florida Department of Insurance. Beware, if you really needed health insurance for a serious illness having just a discount plan could be financially devastating.
What if you are healthy, money is tight and you do not think you need health insurance? Who plans to break a leg, get appendicitis or worse, get cancer? If you want to gamble on your health at least gamble with a lower cost high deductible plan. Some of the health plans I offer have deductibles as high as $5,000. High deductible plans will limit your financial exposure should you require expensive medical care. These plans are relatively inexpensive, limit your financial risk, and even cut costs for routine visits to the family doctor.
What if I have health insurance at work and want to save money? Often you can save money by purchasing an individual health plan for your spouse or child instead of putting them on your employer's group health plan. The best way to express this, you buy life insurance if you love someone and want to take care of them and support them when you are gone. Imagine a two parent household suddenly losing the main money earner or worse, both parents. Who would take care of the family? Who would take care of the children?
